Issue Date: February 2003

One day Lion and Bull came to an agreement. They decided to build a village for themselves and their families. There they lived together as good friends. Soon after, their respective wives, Lioness and Cow, gave birth at the same time. Lion and Bull both had to go out each day in search of food for their families. Later, Cow and Lioness also left the village in a daily search for food.

Young Lion and Young Bull grew and were soon quite strong. They spent their days romping and wrestling like boys. But one unlucky day the fight became real. Strong Young Bull broke Young Lion's foreleg. When Mother Cow came home, she saw what had happened. She told her son: "You have broken more than a living bone. You have broken a living friendship. We must leave quickly."

Mother Cow and Young Bull ran away from the village. In the bush, they asked all the animals, one after the other, whether they could stay there. The response was always a question: "Who are you running from?" Whenever an animal heard that it was Lion, it would tremble and close the door of its den.

Eventually Cow and her son arrived at the house of Man. "You can stay here," Man said. He even built an enclosure for them.

Meanwhile, Lion came home. He found his son lying on the floor, groaning. "What happened?" Lion asked.

"Young Bull broke my arm," his son replied.

"He will pay for that!" roared Lion. The angry Lion ran after the culprit. In his pursuit, he passed the homes of all the animals. They had all barricaded their doors, and all swore to Lion that they had never seen Cow or Young Bull. Finally, Lion arrived at Man's house. There he saw only Cock, perched on the roof. "Where are Cow and Young Bull?" Lion demanded. "If your master protects them, he will answer to me."
