Elephant
and Hare in front of Chief Mungambe and the village court.
The court's decision was easy. The animals told
Elephant: "You are just jealous because Hare has such a
lovely garden."
So Njovu lost his garden. Sungura's cleverness
enabled him to avoid justice, and Zingawetse got bananas and
the ants maize as payment for their part in the deception.
This tale teaches a vital life lesson. Hare may be
dishonest, but he is a cunning criminal and a good
organizer. He also has friends in the right places. Thus he
makes his point in court and wins his case, even though he
is in the wrong. A wise judge must learn all the facts,
question all evidence, and be able to judge character, lest
justice be deceived.
Hare, Lion, and Hyena
One day Lion killed a wildebeest, but it gored him
before it died. Lion was left with an ugly gash in his
belly. He was badly wounded and could hardly move. Many
visitors came to pay him their respects, including the ant,
the termite, the vulture, the crow, and the jackal. Many
others came, including Sungura the hare. Pushing to the
foreground, he addressed Lion: "I will keep house for you
while you are ill. I will cook for you and clean the place!"
