ANALYSIS

Terrorism's Fertile Garden

  • There are approximately 10,000 madrasahs (religious schools) in Pakistan, serving 1.75 million students.

  • The major topic of study is jihad (holy war). Little else is studied but the Qur'an, which is memorized in the original Arabic.

  • All students expect to fight in wars against infidels in places such as Chechnya, the Philippines, Afghanistan, and Kashmir.

  • Parents send their children to these schools because of both their strong religious convictions and their poverty. The schools provide free education, housing, and regular meals.

  • The madrasahs are funded by Saudi Arabia, other Persian Gulf nations, and Muslims in America.

  • There are now over 3,000 mosques and madrasahs in the United States, according to a Pakistani religious leader who sees them as a force to convert America to Islam.
