The baby boomers are now parents. Their children range in age from infants to teenagers who will be taking the reins of society within the next ten to twenty years. However, the society they are growing up in is essentially different from that in which the baby boomers themselves were reared. Many of the values as well as the goals and dreams that buttressed American culture three decades ago are now missing or replaced. This is especially true regarding the roles within the family and the role of the family in the larger society. Changes in this essential societal foundation have ramifications that are just beginning to emerge with respect to the psychological and emotional development of the upcoming generation and the attitude that today's children may take on in the future when they are faced with the challenges of marriage, parenthood, and leadership.
At the same time that the internal structure of American society has metamorphosed, the external environment has also advanced at an astounding rate through technological development. Today's children have at their fingertips means of communication, computation, and intelligence expansion that were never before possible.
Each of the authors of the following series will address the impact of one or several of these elements in today's society on the development of our youth, including extensive day care, divorce, and the ever-growing use of computers in education as well as other technological developments. Each will paint a portrait of today's children against a backdrop of statistical analysis and longitudinal studies, and, based on observable trends, each will make some projection regarding the prospects for the future of the children of the baby boomers.
