With that, Matthew Goose disappeared from the region.  He finally settled down somewhere faraway, took himself a wife, and started a family.  They may still be alive today, if they haven’t died since.

King Matthias and the Truthful Shepherd

Once the King of Prussia went to visit the court of King Matthias.  They greeted each other like best of friends.  Then the Prussian king said to the Hungarian king:

“I hear that you have a lamb with a golden fleece.”

“That’s true enough,” said King Matthias.  “I do have a lamb with a golden fleece among my sheep.  And I also have a shepherd who never told a lie in his life.”

Said the Prussian king, “I’ll show you that I can make him lie!”

“No way,” said King Matthias.  “I know that he would never tell a lie!”

The Prussian king attempts to bribe the truthful shepherd into giving him the lamb with the golden fleece.

“I’ll prove otherwise,” said the Prussian king.  “I’ll trick him into lying!”

“I’ll bet you anything that my shepherd will not lie,” answered King Matthias.  “In fact, I’ll give you half of my kingdom if you can make him lie.”

“And I’ll do likewise.  I’ll give you half of my kingdom, if your shepherd does not lie,” responded the Prussian king.

They shook hands and then the Prussian king said good night to King Matthias. The Prussian king went to a nearby inn for the night.  Dressed as an ordinary peasant, he was soon on his way to the pastures to join the shepherds.  He greeted them cheerfully.  King Matthias’ shepherd responded in kind, “You’re most welcome in our midst, Your Royal Majesty!”
