Aponito
handed her the robe, and she put it on. Then she told her
star servants to fly up to heaven and fetch a basket. Soon
they returned from the sky with a large, sparkling basket.
It descended and came to a standstill in front of Aponito.
Gaygayoma
invited him
to join her and together they stepped into the basket, which
was spacious enough to hold them both. The basket then soared
up into the sky. Aponito was frightened almost to death,
but Gaygayoma enjoyed sailing through the clouds. When they
arrived at her home in the skies, Aponito met Gaygayoma’s
mother, the moon, and her father, Bagbagak [Jupiter]. So
Aponito and Gaygayoma lived happily together in the skies.
After a time, Gaygayoma told Aponito to prick her between
her last two fingers. He did so and out came a handsome
baby boy. They named him Takyayen. The boy grew very fast
and became strong.

Now,
Aponito also had a wife on earth. She was called Bolina.
Gaygayoma knew this, but she wanted to keep Aponito all
to herself. So, when he asked her if he could return to
earth for a time, she could not hear of it. But he continued
to entreat her, until at last she consented: “For one month,
no longer, otherwise I will send my star servants to consume
you.”
She
called for her basket, and Aponito boarded it. The stars
let him descend gently until he stood once more on firm
ground. Bolina was overjoyed to see him, all the more so
since she had given birth to a son, Kanag. So, Aponito now
had two sons, one on earth and one in the sky.
Bolina
told him how she had searched for him desperately but had
only found his jacket in the sugarcane field. Now she understood
how the sugarcane thieves had come in without breaking the
strong fence.
One
night, after they had been happy together for a month, the
star servants of Gaygayoma arrived. They dispelled the darkness
with their bright sparks. Aponito was frightened that he
might be consumed by fire if he delayed, so he was soon
ready for departure. The basket was waiting for him. After
a last tender embrace with Bolina, he was quickly on his
way up through the clouds and back to the sky.
