When the boys awoke, they found themselves lying beside the pond. Taking advantage of the good fortune, they immediately plunged in to cool themselves.  After a swim, they emerged and found they had become so handsome that their bodies seemed to shine like gold. Just then, they heard their cock crowing.  Quickly, they set snares around it and hid in some nearby shrubs.

Now, not far from this glade was the governor’s palace, and in the garden the governor’s daughter was playing. She was a beautiful girl of twelve. When she heard the cock crow, she went searching for the bird in the forest, away from the heat. Just as she saw it, a snare caught her foot.  Suddenly, two handsome boys came running out of the bushes and freed her. She told them that she felt very hot; they suggested she bathe in the pool.  All three swam together and emerged even more beautiful than they had been before. Afterward, the boys accompanied her back to the garden and found the governor waiting worriedly. He saw that his daughter had suddenly become a very beautiful girl.  The boys explained: “You see sir, we have this cock to attract hens which we snare and sell in order to live.  But it is no ordinary cock, for today it caught your daughter.”

The governor gave the boys some money and took his daughter home.  The next morning he went to see the king and spoke of the cock that had caught her.  The king became anxious to possess it and sent messengers to invite the boys to his palace.  When they arrived, he told them: “You two go back to the forest and make your cock crow.  If it attracts my daughter, you may have my entire kingdom.”

So the boys went back to the forest, tied the cock to its stake, set the snares, and waited in the bushes.  The cock crowed so loudly through the woods that part of the palace wall collapsed.  The princess came straight out (for she had felt so hot inside). She walked through the woods until she saw the cock, and a snare caught her foot.  The boys sprang out of hiding, freed her, and brought her in triumph to the king.  Keeping his word, the king gave his title, his palace, his kingdom, and his daughter to the elder brother.  The younger brother married the governor’s daughter and became crown prince.

The king took the cock and retired into the forest. Finding himself a pleasant spot, he lay down to sleep.  Suddenly, an elephant appeared and would have stepped on the cock had it not fought him and plucked out both his tusks.  As the elephant retreated, two sisters emerged from the tusks.  The king awoke, amazed to find himself in the company of two beautiful princesses.  The girls prepared him a meal, and he went in search of his cock.
