Environment in Flux: Energy, Resources, and Climate

Humans are present on every continent, in every ecosystem and climate zone that exists on the planet. The inventiveness of our species has allowed us to create a comfortable existence despite outside extremes. However, it is important to remember that there are environmental elements that are fundamental to life as we know it. Many of these we take for granted. Oxygen, water, and nutrients are basic requirements for life. Optimal environmental conditions, without pollution and rapid fluctuations in temperature, ensure that our food sources (and their food sources) will be plentiful. Beyond that, we require resources to build shelter, provide energy, and produce the material goods we associate with civilization.
In the past few decades, we have become aware of many environmental issues, including pollution, ozone holes, greenhouse gases, and global warming. Each of these has the potential to impact the stability of our inter-dependent habitat. This special collection delves into the issues of Energy, Resources, and Climate, from the scientific, economic, sociopolitical, and philosophical perspectives.
